Lotnumber: 466
PARIS. Rentes Perpetuelles au denier 25. black. No 62. In 1747 the King authorised the Compagnie des Indes to issue 9 million livres of rente, payable from its tobacco monopoly. In 1764, after the disastrous end to the Seven Years War, all French public debt was reorganised, and this included the debts of the Compagnie. The 1747 rentes were replaced by a new issue, on less favourable terms, and this is the contract of the new issue. Unfortunately, the original centre piece (vellum on most rentes, but paper on the 1764 types) is missing. The original 1747 rentes have been seen, but like all other CI pieces, are very rare. Of the 1764 reissue, only one other piece is known (No. 61, auctioned by us in 2003), and so are not listed in the standard catalogue.
