BRUXELLES. Obligation de 1000 Fr. black. #4000. No 2186. Large format, with folds. Vignette of the Archangel Michael (the patron saint of Brussels) slaying the Devil. A lottery loan, with repayment between 1834-1853, for a total amount of 4 million BEF. Issued by the city of Brussels and marketed by the Rothschild bank in Paris and the Société Genérale in Brussels. Personally signed by the Brussels mayor, Nikolaas-Jan Rouppe. The first mayor of Belgium's capital since its independence. A function he held from 1830 until his death in 1838. This is by far the oldest bond from Belgium's capital that we have ever seen.
