ANTWERPEN. Rentebrief van 15 Guilders. black. 14-page handwritten document in Flemish. This bond (rentebrief) of a capital of 300 Guilders and paying 15 Guilders annually, was issued as compensation for the 300 Guilders confiscated by the French revolutionary authorities (see previous lot) from theCogels family. It is dated 1794, but also mentions a payment in 1797. The handwritten text includes the names of several other Antwerp dignitaries who had to pay certain contributions (e.g. Bogaerts, Van Eersel, Baets, Van Geel,...). It is the first time we see any papers relating to the "forced loans" issued by the French after occupying Belgium.
