This company was formed in 1835 this company was formed by Valenciennes investors, who owned already the mines, and the Société de Commerce, which brought cash. In 1855 the mines were sold off to a Société Générale company, 'Couchant du Flénu', which exchanged most Levant shares for its own. However, Levant survived, and finally merged with Haut-Flénu in 1867. Yet, the old company name remained.
