CATALUNYA. BARCELONA. 1 Share of 25 duros. Serie A. green, black. No 4120. The company was formed in 1864, to incorporate the interests of Monturiol, Font, Altadilla & Co. Narciso MONTURIOL invented the 'ICTINEO', the world's first working submarine, which sailed underwater off the Spanish coast from 1859 to 1862. Monturiol was born in Figueras (Gerona province) in 1819, and died near Barcelona in 1885. Although a lawyer by qualification, he conceived the idea of an underwater ship. He solved the technical problems, but never those of finding finance for such an experimental project. In the end, although the submarines were a practical success, the company collapsed, and the two vessels were broken up by creditors, to sell their components. A most interesting and rare share.
