PENNSYLVANIA. PHILADELPHIA. Certificate of $25. red, black. No 885. Small format, with trimmed right border. Folds. Tape on the back to prevent edge-splits. This certificate does not have the name "share", "bond" or "stock" mentioned on it, but the text describes the rights that go along with the ownership of this certificate and this leads us to the conclusion that this is a hybrid investment. For instance, it gives voting rights (just as shares typically do), an interest of up to 6% if sufficient profits are made (such as bonds), transferable 'only on the books of the Corporation', and the Society has at its option to redeem at any time at par the certificate. The cert. also entitles the holder to free admission tickets. The Zoological Society of Philadelphia was founded in 1859 as the first American zoo. Due to the Civil War, actual construction started in 1872 and the official opening took place in 1874 with over 280 animals on display. Today, this 42-acre zoo hosts more than 1,300 animals and is one of the top 3 zoos in the U.S. This type has not been seen by us before and is not listed in the Schmitz/Metzger reference catalogue.
