Walter Thompson advertising company, one of the largest such companies the world has ever seen. JWT (1847-1928) was born in Pittsfield MA, but moved to Freemont OH in 1854. He began his business career in New York City, working in a small advertising agency, and in 1878 bought the company. During the next few years, he laid the foundation of an international operation and helped to establish advertising as the most widely used modern sales method. He entered the still undeveloped field of magazine advertising; many famous magazines refused to print advertising. He formulated the complete technique of modern advertising, especially by appealing to the woman, who buys the family's needs. By 1885 Thompson had added newspapers and other media. In 1896 he incorporated his firm under the name J. Walter Thompson Co. He retired in 1916; by then J. Walter Thompson was the largest advertising agency in the U.S., with branches in Canada and England, andcontinued to grow world-wide ever since. In 2018 it merged with fellow agency Wunderman to form Wunderman Thompson. The combination has employees in 90 countries.
