LOUISIANA. NEW ORLEANS. 5% Bond of $1000. black. Simple design, with corner-vignettes of flowers. The combination of gas-lighting and banking is unusual. Signatures pen-cancelled. Watermarked paper. Folds with splits (professionally restored) and tear (repaired) in right edge. Originally founded in 1829 to complete the gas light system that gave New Orleans the best street lights in America. In 1835, the bank was granted a new charter. Capitalized at $6 million, branches were opened in Alexandria, Port Hudson, Springfield, Napoleonville, and Harrisonburg. It was expected that the Bank would establish lighting systems in these towns like the system in New Orleans, but the bank did not meet these expectations. In 1845 the stockholders requested that its charter be given up.
