PARIS. 5% Obligation de F500. purple, blue, black. #130000. No 93929. Very attractive design by Fraipont, with views of the Haitian coast, cocoa and coffee, and the arms of Haiti. This 1910 loan was issued during a period of relative stability and prosperity. Since the late 19th century, the country had developed industrial sugar and rum industries near Port-au-Prince. The small German community (approx. 200 in 1910) controlled about 80% of the country's international commerce. In 1911, revolution broke out and the country slid into disorder and debt. From 1911to 1915, there were six different Presidents, each of whom was killed or forced into exile. The US, responding to complaints from American banks to which Haiti was deeply in debt, occupied the country from July 1915 until 1934.
