CATALUNYA. BARCELONA. Accion de 250 Pesos, unissued. black on vellum. The 'Barcelona' company was formed in 1748, and is perhaps the best-known of all the superb 18th-century Spanish trading company shares. The company was granted the monopoly of trade with Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico and Margarita island, off the coast ofVenezuela. The initial capital of 1 million pesos was composed of 4.000 shares of 250 pesos each, but only 1.785 were sold at the outset, as the prospects for trade did not seem very attractive. The islands were poor and thinly populated, and the company brought slaves from Africa to promote agriculture. Only after the company obtained the right to trade with Buenos Aires, in 1771, was the first dividend possible. Because of insufficient capital, no further expansion was possible, and the company was taken over by the Real Compania de Filipinas in 1785. The shares of the Barcelona company are of magnificent design, showing the port of Barcelona, and the Virgin of Montserrat, the strange and holy mountain, as well as ship's cargo, a crocodile, fish and so much else. Trimmed borders, but hardly into the printed part of this unissued share (without paper seal).Moderate start price.
