Formed 1876 by the German industrialist Maximilian von Wogau, who arrived in Russia in 1827 and expanded from small dealings to become the richest German businessman in Russia. A Russian industrialist, Alexander Kolchugin, owned a factory producing copper goods, and needed credit to expand; Von Wogau gave him the credit, on condition that he used it to build locomotive boilers. Kolchugin was not very successful, and von Wogau had to acquire a part of his business to avoid losing the money he had advanced. This company was the result. The next 40 years saw the creation of a very large and varied German-controlled industrial empire. The business survived the wars and communism, and was recreated in 1993, today being a major producer of copper products. Text in Russian and French.
