Lotnumber: 617
LISBOA. 5 Acçoes. Serie 1. yellow, black. No 1534-38. Folds. A few tiny edge-splits and some faint brown foxing. One of the most attractive and popular of all zoo pieces, and this is a very rare type: first issue (1884) - 5 shares certificate. Marvelous border of 'action shots' of various wild animals, reptiles and birds. Large, square format, design by Carvalho. The zoo was the first in southern Europe. It was founded, with enthusiastic support from the King, by a Netherlands scientist and a Lisbon doctor. Finance came from an issue of shares, many of which were bought by the King and his father. The zoo opened in 1884, and was very successful at first. However, the novelty passed, and the financial position became worse. In 1904 the zoo was able to move to a new, larger site, and a fresh share issue (partly bought by the city) allowed the zoo to be improved. The zoo still exists today, and offers good facilities for both animals and visitors.
