SCOTLAND. NEW YORK. American Depositary Shares, specimen. blue, black. The Royal Bank of Scotland was founded in 1727, but today's Group also controls the National Westminster Bank (founded 1650) and Ulster Bank (in Ireland). The group issued banknotes in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Collapsed in 2008 and was rescued by the UK Government which still holds an 82% stake. This ADR (printed for American shareholders) has a large vignette of Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll, 1st Earl of Ilay (1682-1761). This Scottish nobleman, politician, soldier and businessman – attimes the "most powerful man in Scotland" - was the founder of the bank and its first governor. His portrait appears on the front of all Royal Bank of Scotland banknotes.
