LONDON. Share of £20. black. No 508. In excellent condition, with seal showing the factory. Issued to raise the company capital with £15,000. The company, founded in 1818, was the earliest gas undertaking in Brighton. The works were situated at Black Rock and the manager of the works for 50 years was J. Rutter who retired in 1881. In that year, the company merged with two later-founded Brighton gas companies into the Brighton, Hove and Worthing Gas Co. The firm further expanded in the 1930s. Nationalized in 1949.
