BRUXELLES. Obligation de F100 (Série 4001 à 8000). blue, black. No 6145-08. Decorative border of Congolese scenes and products, and underprint of the coat of arms of the Congo Free State. The Congo Free State was recognised in 1884, as the personal property of King Leopold II, but international controversy over maladministration, slavery and brutality brought pressure on Léopold to give up his rights. In 1908 the State was annexed to Belgium. Similar to previous lot, but of the second series and with a significantly darker print.
