VIRGINIA. ALEXANDRIA. Shares of $100. brown, green. No 108. Superb vignette of ship, with a submarine firing a torpedo at one of the ships. In 1888 the US Navy Department (at the same time as France) invited submarine designs, and led to the formation of several companies wanting a Navy contract; this was one of thos companies. Unfortunately for J.H.Douglas, the founder, the Navy chose the offer of John P. Holland, who had been engaged in the study of submarines for many years, and built the first of several submarines in 1875. In fact the contract with Holland was not signed until 1895. It was propelled by steam on the surface and electricty below. It was bought by the US Navy in 1900, and the British Navby soon after. Italy and Germany were also building submarines by that date. Extremely rare and interesting.
