NEW YORK. Cert. of 200 shares of $50. black. No 292. Fine vignettes of a train and a ship, the 'Richmond' - maybe a Staten Island/Manhattan ferry. Issued to, and signed twice by Jacob H. Vanderbilt - once on the face as President, and once on the reverse as vendor. Both signatures are uncancelled. Jacob H. Vanderbilt (1807-1893). He was brother to the famous 'Commodore' (see lot 1647). Whilst the Commodore was the great thinker and planner, Jacob made an important contribution to the family successes as the one to implement his brother's plans. His first job was as a controller of shipping, and he worked up to become president of the Staten Island RR in 1862. This was the Vanderbilts' first investment in railroads; it ran from the Vanderbilt Line quays to Staten Island, across New York Bay from Manhattan. A few of these certs have been seen, but all were cancelled. Today, we can present you this completely uncancelled stock certificate in perfect condition.
