Founded 1897 to produce the 1869 French invention of the alternative to butter. Consumption of margarine increased rapidly (in Denmark from 1 kg in 1889 to 18 kg in 1920). Alfa took over several other margarine factories in the early 20th century. In the 1920s, it suffered increased competition, in particular from Dutch companies. Taken over by Unilever in 1929. The margarine factory closed in 1992.
