HAINAUT. BERNISSART. Action, specimen. brown-red, green. #50000. While mining for coal in Bernissart (a small village in Hainaut) has a long history, going back to the early 18th century, the place is best known for the discovery in 1878, at a dept of 322m, of the largest find of Iguanodon remains to date. An Iguanodon is a large, bulky herbvore dinosaur (the second type of dinosaur ever discovered, 1822). Mining engineer Alphonse Briart and scientist Louis de Pauw discovered between 1878 and 1882 no less than 38 species. 31 of them are up till today on exhibit in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels. They form the central part of what is said to be the biggest display of dinosaur skelets in the world. The company - Charbonnages de Bernissart - of which we offer here a specimen share, was founded in 1890, a few years after the end of the escavations, to re-start the mining activities. The mine finally closed in the 1970s. This specimen has a large underprint of the skeleton ofan Iguanodon dinosaur as found in the Bernissart mines.
