ESZTERGOM. Share of 50 Forint. brown, black. No 196. Pretty large-format share, and the oldest Hungarian bank share known to us. We are told that the bank still exists, but under a different name. Until at least 1927 however, the old name was used (we once had a share of this bank from 1927). Superb border, with angels, arms of Hungary and Esztergom, among cornucopias of fruit and flowers, and the whole border of flowers and leaves. Esztergom, on the right bank of the Danube, opposite Slovakia, was for 300 years the capital of the country, is the seat of the Primate of Hungary, and is the birth-place of St.Stephen, the first 'apostolic king' of Hungary. Extremely rare.
