WIEN. Actie von 500 Gulden Conv. Münze. black. No 39045. Folds and the upper right corner taped on cardboard. Dated 19 August 1831 / 26 Feb. 1856 ; in other words a re-issue of the original 1856 share and as such surely extremly rare. The First Danube Steamship Co. was set up in 1829 and initially only navigated the Danube River and its tributaries. In 1834 it also took up marine navigation. At the outbreak of WWI it had one of the largest inland fleets in Europe (142 steamers, 860 tugboats). Its services extended along the Danube from Regensburg, Bavaria, all the way to Sulina, in the Danube delta on the Black Sea, also along various tributary rivers and canals, and even across the Black Sea from Sulina to Odessa and Batum - a total of 5600km of routes. Even after 1918 it remained the leading shipping enterprise on the Danube (1937: 22 passenger steamers, 25 tug and freight steamers, 394 tugboats, 29 oil tankers). The number of ships was drastically reduced during WWII. During the occupation of Austria (1945-55), the company was put under Soviet administration after which it was returned to Austrian ownership as a state-run enterprise. In 1991, the company was split into 2 different companies, DDSG-cargo and the DDSG-Donaureisen (passenger transport). Early and attractive share of thisfamous company. Vignette of an early steamship and the Austrian eagle.
