1 Share of £100. black. No 1769. Formed London, 1834, the second bank in Australia (after the Bank of New South Wales, 1817), as a discount bank, on the principles of Scottish banks. Did well until the 1840s, when drought and depression brought closure of all branches in 1844. Reconstructed under New South Wales law in 1848. Reconstructed again in 1893. Expanded nationwide in 19th and 20th centuries. In 1981 was acquired by the National Bank of Australia. Very rare and animportant piece of early Australian history.
