44 LOIRE-ATLANTIQUE. NANTES. Bon pour F500, unissued. black. No 40. A project for the economic relaunch of France after the Napoleonic wars. The Caisse, formed 1815, with a capital of 200 million francs, was to provide mortgage finance for agricultural property owners, by bringing together a number of capitalists to form a group of lenders, and the issue of 'billets au porteur'. This is one of those billets, for 500 francs, issued in Nantes. The Caisse also managed agricultural properties, an example is the renowned Bordeaux vineyard of Château Palmer, managed by the Caisse from 1844 to 1853. The issue of billets, in denominations from 1000 to 100 francs, totaled 180.000 francs, and was secured by property, presumably in Brittany, valued at 300.000 francs. Decorative border.
