PARIS. Manuscript receipt for 750 livres. black. No 62. , being for 6 months of the payment due for 1778 on a rente perpétuelle, issued in Paris in 1762 for the Duc d'Orléans. This was Louis-Philippe, the 4th Duc d'Orléans (1725-1785), and father of the famous 5th Duc, known as Philippe l'Egalité, who was guillotined in 1793. The 4th Duc had a military career, participating in various battles in the 1740s/50s, but was later known for his frivolous lifestyle in his country house in Bagnolet. Perhaps the rentes were issued to finance that lifestyle, although the family was very wealthy by inheritance.
