BRUXELLES. Titre Prov. d'une Obligation F100, unissued. black on blue paper. #100000. The 1888 bonds from the "Etat Indépendant du Congo", in effect the private property of King Leopold II, are very well known. They were the first issue of bonds to finance the King's plans in Africa. What we offer here is a provisional certificate for these bonds. While the certificate is not in good condition (generally tired condition, paper missing from the borders, edge-splits), the text is fully readable and gives full detail about the loan (on the front) and, on the back, the repayment scheme (lottery loan). Only once before seen by us.
