9% Bond of 1.000 Yen. purple, buff, black. No 56082. Somewhat wrinkled certificate with folds and a little staining. Trimmed bottom due to coupon cutting. Remarkably detailed for a Japanese share. Shows the factory, and numerous inside photos of different departments, with the personnel at work and at play. Even the local pagoda. The reverse has a border wholly made up of the company's products - dozens of different bottles, cans and packets. Text in Japanese on the face, English on the reverse. Formed in 1910 by Hoshi Hajime to produce morphine. During World War I, the Japanese government started to allow domestic production of opium and Hoshi soon became "Japan's narcotics king". In 1918 for instance, the company purchased a 500 acre coca plantation in Peru and began growing coca leaf in Taiwan (=Formosa). Rare high denomination.
