SHANGHAI. Shares of 100.000 Yuan. red, black. No 5668. Towards the end of the 19th century, the first department stores were opened in Shanghai, offering a wide variety of products. Yet, they mainly served foreigners and the Chinese elite. It was only in 1917/1918 that the two first large department stores for the average Chinese were opened. Wing on Company was one of these two. The founders, the brothers Guo, rent a large piece of land south of Nanjing Road, the biggest shopping street of Shanghai. A four-flour building was erected. The company continued to be one of the 'big four' department stores of China for many years. After the Chinese Revolution, the store was renamed as the No. 10 Department Store but recently it was decided that it could revert to its old name. Vignette of two large buildings.
