Issued in Shanghai to John Charles Cole who was as such admitted to the Third Degree of Masonry in Shanghai. After the Treaty of Nanking (1842), the port town of Shanghai opened to foreign trade and established, amongst others, strong trading relations with the American port city Boston, MA. Hence, in 1864, the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts chartered a lodge in Shanghai, called the Ancient Landmark Lodge. The Massachusetts Grand Lodge was responsible for the constitution of several other lodges in China, but by 1950, all lodges in China went into voluntary recess.
