Very colourful, attractive piece, with well-known design of Indian themes - elephants, Hindu gods and ceremonies, and the company's spinning & weaving mill (probably for cotton) at Pondicherry. This town, on India's south-east coast, was settledin 1673 by the Compagnie des Indes, and after British occupation, was confirmed as French by treaties. It formed part of the Etablissements Français de l'Inde, the remains of the former French empire in India, which became part of India in 1954. The company was founded in Bordeaux in 1886 to acquire an existing mill at Pondicherry. Its affairs were reorganised in 1924, leading to the issue of these shares. (Ref. Girondins d'Antan, by Henri Largeteau). This is the earliest certificate known of thiscompany (1924, capital 4 mio. FRF). Later issues are less rare than this one.
