It was formed in Hong Kong in 1864 and opened its doors in Hong Kong and Shanghai in 1865. It became one of the largest and most influential banks in the far East, with branches in many cities in China, Japan, Thailand, India, Burma, Malaya, as well as USA and Europe. It enjoyed the confidence of various governments, and was responsible for various state loans, in China and othercountries. This is one of very few 19th century shares ever seen from HSBC.
