PARIS. Quart d'Action pour 1500 £. black. No 70. Folds and a few faint brown spots. Founded August 1792 by Charles-Emmanuel Gaulard de Saudray under the name of "Lycée des arts" to give free courses, and also to encourage and reward inventors of useful products. In 1802 it became the "Athenée des arts (de Paris)", and later the "Athenée (ou Lycée) des arts, sciences, belles-lettres et industrie de Paris". Its last publication was in 1866. By 1808 its address was rue du Lycée, place du palais du Tribunal, but by 1831, it was place de la Sorbonne. The Lycée printed its own publications. Bearer share of 1500 livres, paying 5% interest, an anticipated dividend of 10%, and a subsidised place at the Lycée, the total worth 20% per annum. It is not clear how it was able to give such a generous return when its courses were free. Probably unique.
