PARIS. Share of 500 livres. black on vellum. No 887. Folds. This share was issued for the armament and fitting-out of two corsairs, sailing from Brest to the Antilles. The ships were the Le Glorieux (2ème rang), built Brest 1679, 3 decks, 62/66 canons, and Le Solide (3ème rang), built Brest 1696, 3 decks,50 canons. These shares were administered by a notary at Le Châtelet, Paris, who would share out the profits that God would bring to the voyages. Note the exceptionally early date for this share: 1708 (during the reign of King Louis XIV) ! As such, it is the 3rd oldest French share (after the first Compagnie des Indes, 1665 and the Co. Royale de l'Assiente, 1704) we have ever registered and perhaps the world's oldest corsair/privateer/pirate share. A unique piece from an old collection.
