HAINAUT. HORNU. Action Nominative et Indivisible. black. #16. No 3. The Escouffiaux coalmine was already active in the late 18th century. In 1806, a first Newcomenwater-pump was installed, allowing mining to a depth of 289 meters. It became a limited company in 1837 (S.A. du Charb. de l'Escouffiaux) until 1843. In 1845, the Société Civile, of which we offer this share, was created and it seems the mine came under control of the French Rothschild group. In 1846, James de Rothschild created the Cie des Charbonnages Belges which was basically a holding company controlling 3 companies: this Soc. Civile mining in Escouffiaux, the coalmines from Agrappe et Grisoeuil and the C.D.F. de St. Ghislain. This share was transferred to the S.A. des Charb. Belges on 8 Mai 1846. Most of the coal was exported to France. Only 16 shares issued and never before seen by us.
