Lotnumber: 116
Shares of £20. green. No 1998. Central fold. In 1843 Rowland MacDonald Stephenson, a railway engineer, went to India, to build railways there, and had a dream of a line from India to Europe. In 1884 his dream became a public company, which sold over 50.000 shares, including those represented by this certificate, to some 2000 people. Stephenson became managing director of the East India Railway Co., based in Calcutta, and also of the Imperial Ottoman Railway (line Smyrna-Aidin, which could be an element in a Bombay-London line). We find no info on what happened to the company, which presumably remained nothing more than Stephenson's dream. Not seen before by us.
