Originally established in 1851 as the Commercial Bank of India (Huilong Bank) as a joint venture between British and Indian merchants and mainly engaged in the exchange business in the Far East. First headquartered in Bombay (Mumbai), later London. It was also the first foreign bank to enter mainland China. It did so in 1851, setting up a branch in Guangzhou. Shanghai followed in 1854 and in 1861, Hong Kong, Fuzhou and Hankou opened. The bank also had branches in London, Kolkata, Yokohama, Singaporeand San Francisco (to buy gold bars). In 1864, the bank changed to a corporate organization and was renamed "Commercial Bank Corporation of India & The East". In 1866, the European cotton crisis triggered a financial panic in London. The bank collapsedand the branches closed down.
