GISBORNE. Shares of £1. green, black. No 2. Attractive share with large underprint of the Roman goddess Minerva, also shown on the left border. The company had a capital of £50,000 and owned boring rights over Mangataikapua block, 5 miles north-west of Whatatutu (North Island). Operations were begun with a paid-up capital of only £500. A bore was drilled to 750 feet, and, as additional capital could not be obtained, the enterprise was abandoned in 1888. Certificate number 2, representing 100 shares of £1 (thus 20% of the paid-up capital). Not seen before by us.
