MELBOURNE. Shares of £1. black. No 158. The Songvaar was a Norwegian cargo ship that transported Australian wheat from Port Victoria to Europe. In 1912 it sank near Wardang Island (close to Yorke Peninsula, South Australia) when its hull was pierced by one of its own anchors. The Songvaar Salvaging Co. was established to refloat the vessel, but failed. In 1920, the wreck was finally blown up as a shipping hazard. Nowadays, the waters around Wardang Island are popular with recreational divers because of opportunities for wreck diving there are 9 shipwrecks around the island. Not seen before by us.
