NEW YORK. More than 100 Shares of U.S.$1. red, black. No 562. Commodore was founded in 1954 in Toronto by Polish immigrant and Auschwitz survivor Jack Tramiel. At first, production focused on typewriters. By 1962, Commodore International Ltd was listed on NYSE and the firm became a successful producer of electroniccalculators in the early 1970s. Commodore made a chess computer as early as 1978. Soon, home computers followed, most famously the Commodore 64 and Amiga models. In the meantime, its operational headquarters had moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania.By the late 1980s, IBM and Apple Macintosh started dominating the PC market and Commodore was declared bankrupt in 1994.
