MANCHESTER. 7% Cotton Certificate for £100. black. No 798. Folds. Printed on thick paper. Large format. Issued during the Civil War by the State of North Carolina. In return of £100, the State promises to deliver 12 bales of cotton, 400lbs. each at the port of Wilmington, Charleston, or Savannah, or any other port in the possession of the Confederate States Government (except the ports of Texas). The 7% interest will be paid half-yearly in Manchester as long as the cotton has not been claimed by the holder of this certificate. Handwritten notes show interest being paid twice in 1864 and once in 1865. Exceptionally rare southern state bond, not listed in Criswell. Only 2 of these bonds were found a few years ago, and with one piece already in a collection, this is the sole piece left available. Rarity 11.
