CALIFORNIA. SAN FRANCISCO. 10% Bond of $1000. black, pink. No 2857. Trimmed borders. Very early San Francisco piece. View of the waterfront, already busy with shipping as a result of the boom after the discovery of gold in 1848. San Francisco's beginning was in 1776, when the Mexican Presidio was founded, followed by the township of Yerba Buena. Name changed to San Francisco in 1847. The U.S. flag was raised in the town in 1848. Note states 'redeemed'. This is the first bond issued by the City of San Francisco. It is signed 3 times by John White Geary (1819-1873):on the bond and on the 2 coupons. Geary was elected first Mayor of San Francisco in 1850. He was later Republican Governor of Pennsylvania and major-general by the end of the Civil War. Rarity 10.
