MARYLAND. BALTIMORE. Shares of $100. black. No 1738. Chartered 1827 to build a line across the barrier of the Appalachian Mountains, opening the Midwest to the port of Baltimore. The main line ran from Baltimore to Wheeling WV, on the Ohio River, flowing into the Mississippi. The network expanded to Chicago IL and East St.Louis IL. It became part of the Chessie System in 1987. Although earlier stock transfer certs have been seen, 1835 is the oldest date know of an issued B&O share. The vignette is well known but extraordinary, and is worth a very close look; the last wagon has a road-carriage on it. Famous share, of one of the oldest railroads in the US, and the very first common carrier railroad. Signatures cut out.
