10 Shares of £1. blue. No 1329. After liberation by Simon Bolivar, the area of today's Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador gained independence as a single country, named Colombia. This did not work well, and the country fell apart, becoming the three republics we know today. The part known today as Colombia took the name New Granada, later reverting to the former name Colombia.
