It was in 1906 when the Berner Alpenbahn Gesellschaft Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon was founded for the construction of the Lötschbergbahn, as a competitor to the Gotthard route. This Alpine railway line, with its 13Km-long tunnel, was finally opened in 1913. It quickly became a major trans-Alpine route, although was at first hampered by being a single-track route; it was not fully double-track until 1992, and now has heavy truck and container business between northern and southern Europe. A good 90years after formation some smaller companies merged with BLS, and the company now has a regional network in Switzerland, including Bern suburban trains. A merger with Regionalverkehr Mittelland in 2006 formed the present BLS AG. Nowadays 75% of the company is in the hands of the Swiss Confederation and the cantons of Berne, Lucerne, Solothurn, Valais and Neuchatel.
