It was in 1906 when the Berner Alpenbahn Gesellschaft Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon was founded for the construction of the Lötschbergbahn, as a competitor to the Gotthard route. A merger with Regionalverkehr Mittelland in 2006 formed the present BLS AG. Nowadays 75% of the company is in the hands of the Swiss Confederation and the cantons of Berne, Lucerne, Solothurn, Valais and Neuchatel.
