Lotnumber: 694
SURREY. RICHMOND. 7% Cum. Part. Preference Shares of £1. blue, black. #300000. No 588. Folds. The original Whitehead Company was formed by John Whitehead, in 1915, to acquire his small aircrafts works in Richmond, southwest London. It was reconstructed under this name in 1917, when it received large government contracts to build Sopwith fighter-planes for the Royal Air Force. To manufacture on this scale, it bought a large factory at the aerodrome at Feltham (close to today's Heathrow). There it produced several thousand aircraft, and made good profits. It designed its own reconnaissance aircraft, but the war ended before it could be put into production. The company never really found a role after the War, and by 1919 there were already moves to liquidate it. These were delayed but by 1923 a liquidator was selling the assets, and the company was wound up. Fine vignettes of a view of the factories at Feltham aerodrome, also large underprint, and other vignettes, of Sopwith fighters. By far the most attractive of British aviation shares.
