Black. Worn condition with folds, discoloured paper, staining and edge-tear. Ticket from the first Loterie Royale. Prior to 1776 there were various small local lotteries in France, but the advisors of Louis XVI thought that the creation of one large nationwidelottery, to replace all others, would be popular, and bring in revenue for the crown. Tickets were offered at 700 outlets across the country. It quickly became a source of various criminal and fraudulent activities, but lasted until 1793, when it was suppressed (although restarted in 1797).
