BRUXELLES. Action Ordinaire. blue, orange. #6000. No 1396. Dominating the production of Belgian architectural books in the late 19th century were the titles issued by Charles Claesen of Liège, successor to D.Avanzo et Cie. The Lyon-Claesen publishing company was formed in 1899 to acquire the existing business of Mr. Lyon-Claesen, but half of the shares were issued to a producer of maps, in exchange for the sole right to publish its work. However, the company also published general books, drawings, prints, manuscripts, etc. By the turn of the century Lyon-Claesen had developed an international network of distribution for their publication by both Belgian and foreign authors, with offices in France, Germany, England and the USA. Lyon-Claesen was the first Belgian architectural publishers to develop a significant international market for its products. The border and underprint are in the finest Jugendstil, and the whole piece ranks as perhaps the finest of all publishing shares we have seen. This action ordinaire is much more rare (perhaps only 5 known) than the action privilégiée. As a matter of fact, it's the first time we offer this type. The colour of the drawing is somewhat different, stronger (blue instead of grey) and fewer of these actions ordinaires were issued.
