Cathay is an alternative name for China in English, originating from the word Khitan, the name of nomadic people ruling much of northern China from 907 to 1125. Company founded in Hong Kong. Part of a $1,5 million loan issued to Sir William Johnston Keswick. Keswick (1903-1990) was born in Japan but educated at Trinity College in England. Afterwards, he continued the important family business in the Far East. They led the Jardine Matheson conglomerate and held important positions in the HSBC Bank, the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. and many other Hong Kong companies. William J. Keswick was in charge of the Shanghai office of the family business (at that time the Head Office in the Far East), chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council, Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Co., director of the Bank of England, etc. Keswick signed this certificate twice, as general manager on the front and because of a transfer on the back. Company dissolved in 1996. Rarity 10.
